Cabich, bird fude, nodiles, buttmilk, dog yogurt, bannes, hare sope, cream of salary soup.*

What do these things have in common? They're all items from real grocery lists. Whose lists? Who knows. They were found discarded in shopping carts, dropped on supermarket floors and parking lots, even tucked in returned library books.

These lists have been collected into the volume you are now holding. Peek inside to see what people will write on scraps of paper they never expect anyone else to see. Marvel at the unusual combinations of food the average person shops for. You'll find yourself captivated by this unexpected and off-kilter glimpse into the lives of those around you.

Separated into chapters -- funny lists, sad lists, unhealthy lists, organized lists -- the book also includes commentary by the author and some delicious recipes created from found grocery lists.

If we are what we eat, then this book reveals deep and strange truths about the average food shopper... not to mention more mundane facts like a lot of people love vodka, banana is actually very difficult to spell and that butter used to be dyed yellow using marigolds.

*Translation: Cabbage, bird food, noodles, buttermilk, dog yogurt (duh), bananas, shampoo, cream of celery soup.

I love this book for the simple fact that you can open it at any point, at any page, and be instantly entertained. It's a must have book, makes a great gift for anybody. We bought one for a friend, before we wrapped it up we checked it out, loved it so much we bought another for our home. We went to see the grocery list exhibit in St. Louis and were blown away.

If you're into quirky, voyeuristic looks into other peoples lives, you'll love this. Some of the commentary on the lists is a little pointless, but the lists provide more than enough humor. On the other hand, if you looked at this page wondering why anyone would want a book of other people's grocery lists, stay far away.

 "Great" 2009-11-11
By Amanda Sickau (NY, USA)
I've recently started clipping coupons and couldn't get over how disorganized they were just floating around in my purse come my bi-weekly trip to the supermarket. I poked around for a coupon-organizer for a bit but didn't want one of those chintzy plastic ones or one of those cardstock ones like my mom used to carry around. I found this on Amazon. The price was right, the print was cute, and it's great. Comes with cardstock dividers that fit right in and pre-printed labels to designate. Slips right into my purse and now I don't look like a fool fumbling around for my coupons. No complaints.

By Jane Smith (killeen, tx United States)
I used to think I was too young for coupons, but once I got into the hang of clipping and printing them, I needed something to organize them in. I chose this organizer/wallet and its great!! It is sturdy canvas (or something like that) and comes with 24 cardstock dividers and pre-printed category labels. You don't have to use them, but since they cover just about everything, I did. I can keep my cell phone and ID/cards in it as well, so I don't even bother lugging my purse around most of the time. This also attaches to your cart with a velcro strap, and the coupons don't fall out so all in all, a good buy.

"Are you Losing or Winning the Grocery Game?" 2009-12-10
By Rebecca Johnson (Washington State)
Randall Putala is a coupon expert with a lot of wisdom to share. He includes copies of receipts in the back of the book that show how much money you can save when using coupons.

This book is really a wakeup call and dispels many myths about coupon usage. Randall Putala is like the coupon drill sergeant as he uses a lot of CAPS to make his points. For most of the first half of the book he spends time convincing readers that using coupons is a good idea, whether you are rich or poor. He even claims that Oprah uses coupons.

What is interesting about this particular book is the descriptions of typical shoppers and how they can change their strategy to save money.

For the last half of the book, Randall Putala spends time convincing the reader that cooking is fun and easy. He provides lots of recipes you can throw together in minutes. I think his method of cooking is easy and I can see why he thinks cooking is not work. On the other hand, cooking is work for most people and takes a lot of effort. First you have to spend hours collecting all the ingredients and then you have to spend more hours putting meals together from scratch. I easily spend an hour a day cooking meals, hours looking through cookbooks for new recipes, and spend a few hours clipping coupons.

One of the things I think Randall Putala is completely right about is his encouragement to try new products with new coupons. Recently I used a coupon for crackers I would not have purchased before and both my husband and I ended up loving them and now we buy them on every shopping trip even though we don't have another coupon for them.

So this book is filled with practical advice that will be appreciated by those who are new to coupon shopping. The author's main goal seems to be to lead the reader to "coupon nirvana," a place where you get a high from saving so much money it blows your mind.

While the author says you should throw away your expired coupons so you don't mistakenly use them and get yourself into trouble, I found out that you can donate expired coupons to military families. The coupons can be used six months after their expiration date.

After reading this book I am even more eager to save money with coupons. I will however not be giving up pre-grated cheese or organic milk anytime soon. I know they are more expensive but the convenience and taste are worth the price. It is possible to find coupons for organic milk these days and I used one earlier this month.

 "Not What I Expected" 2009-04-16
By T. Armstrong
I expected a book with new ways for me to save money on groceries but I found it filled with info I already knew and used. The only part I found helpful was how manufactures sale price their products as coupons are getting ready to expire. Maybe it would be a good book for someone who has never tried using coupons or has little experience with them but for someone like myself who is an avid user of coupons it provided me with little new info.

"Terrific book that paid for itself" 2009-04-06
By annesailorgirl (Berrien Spgs, MI USA)
Rarely have I purchased a book that paid for itself within the first week of owning it. I read this book cover-to-cover by the 2nd day after it arrived. I like the idea of making cheaper groceries into something of a game, plus saving money. Usually I look for sales, or clip maybe 8-10 coupons a year, and then redeem 1-2 and lose the rest. This book has really helped me to organize. I've made out the envelopes and labeled them, as the author suggests. And now I've made it a particular challenge to look for items that I need (but not necessarily name-brand or loyal-brand items) that are both on sale, plus I have coupons for. In all of my shopping this weekend of combining sales with coupons, I saved an average of 50% or more, for over $100 in savings. There are a few simple concepts: stockpile cheaper items, look for sales plus use coupons.

The book starts with the example of a man who walks into a car dealership, and demands to pay full price for the car, with the sworn assurance that no one -- no one -- is paying more for their car than he is. Of course this is in comparison with food shopping which can be up to 20% of people's yearly pay -- why not try to find ways to reduce those costs? The author makes the interesting analogy of taking a $1 coupon and a $1 bill, and how would you feel about shredding both of them in the shredder? He says not to do this because it is illegal to destroy US money -- but the point is that they both can count as money. I loved this little book and I highly recommend it for anyone who eats and would like to save money eating.

Here's a quick rundown of the chapters:

1. What Color is Your Shopping Cart? (which of 5 types of grocery shoppers is most like you?)

2. The "7 Deadly Sins" (signs that you may be losing the "grocery game" -- such as your family is unhappy with the food you serve, you throw out food that you don't eat, people are hungry, binge snacking, etc)

3. Here's Your Sign (pitfalls for each of the grocery shopper types)

4. The "12 Steps to Recovery"

5. The Myths & Misconceptions of Store Coupons

6. Startegy & Tactics: How to Win the War for Your Wallet

7. Couponing Tactics: The Simplest Way to Organize Coupons (8 envelope categories and how to be organized)

8. The Currency vs. Coupon Litmus Test (what coupons are really worth)

9. Clubs, Cards & Counterintelligence (explains how frequent shopper cards really work)

10. The Power of Rebate Clubs, aka "Your Check's in the Mail"

11. A Rebate Returned is Money Earned

12. The Economics of Food

13. Smart Grocery Choices & Core Ingredients

14. Real Food, Real Cooking

15. A System for Cooking = A System for Savings

16. Quick-Cooking: The Secret to Happier, Healthier Meals

17. Planning Your Menus

18. Miscellaneous Cost Cutters

19. Online Coupon Hunting

WOW. The author uses his experience in advertising to give a unique and valuable perspective on how to save money at the grocery. I'm a pretty smart shopper, but this book has definitely opened my eyes to a myriad of ways to save $$ that I had no clue of. Wish I'd read it sooner, I've been throwing money away and didn't even know. I can't imagine going back to my old grocery-store habits. Excellent text, funny as well! I want to re-read it but my coworkers keep lending it to one another. GRR, guess I'll have to buy another copy so I have one to read, one to lend.. haha.

"Do your homework properly and for FREE instead of relying on this book" 2008-01-24
By Naomi's mom (Sunnyvale, CA USA)
There are many problems with this book ranging from harmless to disconcerting. If you have done your homework by reading other books/leaflets, you will probably wish that this book was entitled "Do It Yourself Baby Rearing At Your Own Risk" instead of "1000 Best Baby Bargains". Here's a short list of the most troubling aspects of the book:

1. Overpriced for something that can be quickly read in an hour or two. Especially since most of the info is available for FREE if you go to Planned Parenthood (re: WIC), your OB, or your hospital's FREE intro sessions (e.g. in California they will give you a First 5 kit with even more valuable local support resources).

2. Even many of the do-it-yourself suggestions are not novel. If you're into sewing, you couldn't possibly miss the baby sections of the pattern catalogs. If you're not already into sewing, now is probably not the time to start for most people given that there is a learning curve, shopping, raging hormones at play, and perhaps unrealistic expectations about how great the final product will look on your first try.

3. The safety suggestions lack explanation and completeness. It is even shallower than what you will find in the FREE parenting magazines at your doctor's office.

4. Some info is downright wrong. Reusing breastpumps is not recommended because some of them, like the super popular Medela Pump-In-Style is not a closed system and thus there are some parts, exposed to breastmilk, which cannot be replaced. The replacement tubing offered by some hospitals cost upward of $70 (so new but simpler pumps may be cheaper). You can find this info for FREE at retail websites or through Medela's own FREE literature that is handed out at hospitals.

5. Some of the recommendations, e.g. modifying the holes in bottle nipples runs directly contrary to the manufacturer's recommendations printed on all nipple packaging. Sure, you can try to do it carefully as the book suggests but I think your baby is worth more than the $1 or less that you will save per nipple. Certainly you'll feel like an idiot if something truly awful happens.

I didn't read the entire book but what I read would indicate that one should be reading other books... in which case, why bother with this one? Btw, I found this book at my local library for FREE.

They have suggestions of things I would never have dreamt of (but are creative and useful from people who have already been there and have good suggestions to share.) I choose the tips that will be most useful to me and I am sure that I will come back to this book again and again.

If you plan to breastfeed, you do not want to get yourself on everyone's mailing list, because the companies share information and give/sell your information to the formula companies. Nothing in life is really "free". Even the free magazines are published by formula companies and deliver bad breastfeeding advice designed to undermine both confidence and success. Our babies deserve better.

"Great Ideas for Getting Free Coupons in the Mail" 2009-11-25
By Rebecca Johnson (Washington State)
"Companies appreciate consumer feedback so much that sometimes when it is volunteered, they will send a coupon for a free product." ~ pg. 26

If you have been avoiding writing companies for coupons then you will love this book. There are sample letters and ideas for how to write postcards to get almost free coupons. The only thing you will need to do is to buy pre-stamped postcards.

I used one idea in this book to get a few coupons for products I buy all the time. Going to the company's website and filling out a comment form was well worth the effort. I found this was faster than writing a letter because the coupons arrived so quickly.

So while this book is very short and to the point it will be very useful to anyone who is timid about writing big corporations. Getting coupons in the mail turns out to be really fun and it is even more fun to watch the price of your groceries drop as the clerk scans them at the store.

I went to the author's website and it was down, but there was another URL in the book at the end that I tried and found a great site with lots of excellent deals. Like if you want to save money in the grocery store at amazon there is a link to a special page with a list of offers.

 "Excellent Book" 2009-10-20
By K. Delaporte
I read this book cover to cover. The content is excellent. There are lots of new ideas throughout the book on saving money in the grocery store you won't find in typical woman's magazine. The book was well worth the money and more. I have saved $100's of dollars since applying the knowledge I learned in this book.

I am grateful I bought this book. I knew a lot of traditional methods of saving money on groceries including clipping coupons, finding great grocery deals, etc. This book covered a non-traditional method on how to receive free groceries I had never heard before. The book is worth its weight in gold. I am grateful to the author for making this knowledge available to the general public.

How to Receive Free Groceries

Save your money...I have never felt the need to rate a book before but i got this tonight after it was recommended from the author. Majority of the pages are taken up with large pictures and large print, maybe to eat us space and bring it up to 90 pages. This is below the basics of coupons, the author tells you to buy post cards and mail them to the manufacturers asking for coupons that is the basis of the book. Oh, and to match up your coupons to the items on sale. Duh!!!! Get another book by another author.

 "Very Helpful Websites!" 2009-12-09
By Rebecca Johnson (Washington State)
There are a lot of coupon books out there each with a different focus. "Cut it Out Start Saving" is for the shopper who wants to look for deals online. This book is packed full of websites and essential information. Denise Long and Phyllis Milano have really done their research.

Some of the highlights of this book include: coupons for baby items, websites to go to for savings on vacations, where to get free craft supplies, how to get free medication, where to find help for senior citizens and the disabled and where to find freebies online.

In this book you will learn how to join a coupon train or where to find online printable coupons. While giving good advice the authors also tell stories about how they saved hundreds of dollars with coupons. They even include a picture of the receipts.

As someone who has spent hours online trying to find the best coupon sites I must say this book would have saved me lots of time sorting through google search results. Get this book and start saving money the day you receive it!

"The Tricks of The Trade" 2009-11-26
By Rebecca Johnson (Washington State)
Teri Gault started using coupons when she was a child. Later she went from riches to rags and back again. Throughout her life she has had times when she literally could not put food on the table unless she used coupons.

First Teri teaches you how to map out your favorite grocery store in your brain. She gives lists of questions to ask about any of the stores you are considering. I do this every time I go shopping at Fred Meyer and write out a list of items to buy on an envelope that now holds all my lovely coupons. I don't need to look at the coupons the whole time I'm shopping because I've written the exact item on the envelope according to where it is in the store. This saves me so much time and makes my life easier when my husband decides he is shopping with me and will be pushing the cart.

This book talks a lot about stockpiling and I do that on a few items, mostly beauty products I know I'm going to use frequently. Teri also recommends stores like Costco and Sam's Club if you are cooking for a crowd.

At the end of the book there is a small section listing websites where you can get free printable coupons. I printed off $4.65 in coupons to use during my next shopping trip.

One of the things I loved about this book was the "Yearly Calendar of Seasonal Savings." That you can refer to throughout the year so you buy everything on sale and with coupons. The lists tell you what time of year to stock up on necessities.

Teri Gault's book has a very cozy style. She also shares her own recipes and gives tips on how to give great parties. Since you will be saving so much money clipping coupons you will have extra cash to do whatever your heart desires. Maybe you are wishing for an exotic vacation. It is now possible if you follow the advice in this book.

Reading this book convinced me that I need to get into the game so I plan to sign up for Teri's four week trial. The stories in this book are amazing and really motivate you into action.

Recently I saved $35 at the grocery store and it was all products and food we really use all the time. I'll put the URL to my page in the comments section so you can see where to go to start clipping online coupons. What is really needed is an entire book of websites that have printable coupons. That would be ideal. If you know of one, please contact me from my website or leave a comment here.

"Author used the book to plug her website-poor taste" 2009-11-13
By Liaglynn (Army Wife, All over!)
I'm a couponer and becoming a "gamer" for a few weeks now. I was excited to read this book when I checked it out from the library. Teri chose A very deceptive title for this book. I found her plugging her website more than actually writing about shopping and saving money.

Honestly, after only couponing and "cutting back" for a few weeks now, most of the information in this book, I already knew. I only learned 3 things from this book. 1- To record my name on the cover of my coupon binder and offer a reward if found, 2- "The petroleum in 14 plastic bags could drive a car one mile." and 3-In 2006, a new software made web coupons more accepted by stores and these coupons are worth more than the ones offered in the paper.

After chapter 7, it looks like Teri forgot what kind of book she was writing. It then became a cookbook & party planning book. Chapter 8 is called "You're Invited!" This entire chapter is explaining how she "has gotten party-planning down to a science." Quote from her first paragraph on pg 130. Like most of her book, this has nothing to do with her title, "Shop Smart, Save More"

Thank goodness I checked it out from the library and didn't pay for it.

"You don't need this book." 2009-08-23

 "A Waste of Money" 2009-02-08
By Lee Anne Guryn (Pennsylvania)
This book is a waste of money. Only a very small portion of it is about how to save money on groceries and even that is encouraging you to use her website. I live in a rural area which only has Rite Aid as a store listed on her site. She does not really tell how to use your own store and most of the book is how to have a party and recipes. A Big Disappointment.
